404 – “Independence is my happiness, and I view things as they are, without regard to place or person; my country is the world, and my religion is to do good.”

–Thomas Paine [Often misquoted, see Source Notes]

Note: The original quote contained two long “S”es ( ſ ). One in happineſs and one in perſon.

Quote Number:  79

Source: Paine, Thomas. Rights of Man: Part the Second Combining Principle and Practice. J S Jordon: London. 1792. Pg 106. Online here.

Source Notes: It appears to me that this quote is often misquoted as: “The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion.” It may be that this is from a different source, but I could not find any reliable one.
